Barry graduated with a degree in Marketing at the Business School of UW-Madison in 1993, while lettering in hockey and earning First Team All-American honors. The following year he represented his country while playing for Team USA and participating in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.

Immediately following the Olympics he embarked on a professional hockey career spanning 15 years, playing for several clubs including the NY Rangers, NY Islanders, Boston Bruins, and Montreal Canadians. The final seven years were spent playing overseas in Sweden and Switzerland.  At that time he earned his Property and Casualty license in 2002 and completed the Real Estate Certificate program at the University of Wyoming in 2008.

Following his retirement from professional hockey in April of 2008, Barry and his family moved back to their hometown Madison and he went to work for the Fish & Schulkamp Agency on the commercial side of Property & Casualty.  In September of 2010, he joined the Hausmann-Johnson Team, received his Life and Health license, and has been helping businesses manage their risks in both lines.  Barry feels that with his background as an athlete, he can make a difference in how employees view their health.

Barry is married to Kim and they have 4 children that keep him active. He currently serves on the W Club Board of Directors, Madison Area Sports Commission, USA Hockey as an Athlete Director, and Account Executive for the United Way. Barry and his father Pat help run the Easter Seals Golf Outing every year to help Camp Wawbeek up in the Wisconsin Dells area. He also helps coach the West Madison Polar Caps youth hockey organization in the winters.
