Human Resources Professional Development Opportunities in October

In Wisconsin, we are fortunate to have a number of very active organizations that have as their mission the support and development of the Human Resources Profession.

I’d like to share information about two organizations that are hosting annual conferences this October.

The Wisconsin Society for Human Resources Management (WISHRM) is hosting their annual State Conference on October 11-13, 2017 at the Kalahari in the Wisconsin Dells.  This conference will draw more than 1000 participants and will feature national and local subject matter expert speakers.  No matter what your human resources related responsibilities are, the conference has learning opportunities that will meet your needs.

Business owners and managers should also consider attending the conference as human resources topics and employee engagement are very important for business success.

You might ask yourself, “Is it worth two days of my time to attend?” The answer is a resounding “yes!” You will have the opportunity to learn best practices for hiring and retaining employees in a tough labor market. You can get current information about employment law and compliance and lower your risk for an expensive lawsuit (including discrimination, wage & hour, etc.).  You can also get ideas about how to improve employee engagement, and therefore productivity, which both positively impact your customer and your bottom line.

Networking opportunities abound! It is a chance to exchange ideas with people in different industries and from different parts of the state. It allows you to meet new people who you might help in the future, or who might help you. For some participants, it is an opportunity to interact with current and potential clients and chat with vendors and resource providers. Certainly one of the things I look forward to at the conference is re-connecting with friends and former co-workers that I have had the pleasure of working with over the years.

Hausmann-Johnson is proud to be the Employee Benefits and Compensation Sponsor for WISHRM and will be hosting a booth at the event. Further information about the event can be found here:

The Association of Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin (ABC of Wisconsin) is one of the very few chapters in the United States to host a Human Resources conference. ABC is an organization created to support its member companies in the construction industry. The organization provides training in a wide array of apprenticeship, field level, and management education along with safety and human resources training.

ABC of Wisconsin will again host its annual Human Resources Conference October 25 – 26 at the Kalahari in the Wisconsin Dells. This year’s training tracks fall into the categories of ‘War for Talent’, ‘HR Boot Camp’ (Basics of HR), ‘Human Resources’, and ‘Accounting’.

Individuals who are in the construction industry or in companies supporting the construction industry should consider attending. If you are in that industry, you are aware of the particular challenges that construction employers are experiencing relating to sourcing, training, and managing the labor pool that you need to fulfil your contracts. This conference is designed with your industry specific needs in mind.

Hausmann-Johnson is pleased to be a Platinum Sponsor of this event. Registration information is available here:

I would encourage you to check out these learning opportunities and please stop by the Hausmann-Johnson booth at these conferences if you attend.

We look forward to saying hello!

With over 20 years of human resources management in numerous industries, Mary Jo is uniquely qualified to advise the clients of Hausmann-Johnson Insurance on human resources related issues. She provides guidance on complex employment topics such as employee relations, talent management, recruitment, onboarding, and training. Mary Jo and her team help “lighten the load” for clients that may otherwise spend a lot of time, effort and energy attempting to do their own risk management and employee benefits administration. Mary Jo is especially excited about the journey Hausmann-Johnson has taken to become designated as a Great Place to Work by the Great Place to Work Institute. She began studying the process over 10 years ago and when she joined Hausmann-Johnson she knew the pieces were in place to catapult the agency onto the list of the 10 Best Places to Work in Insurance, which was achieved in 2015. Mary Jo is a graduate of Marian University with degrees in Business Administration and Human Relations. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Community Support Network and serves as a consultant to the Personnel Committee of her village board. When she’s not working she takes the time to relax with family and friends at her cabin on the Wisconsin/Upper Michigan border.
